WHAT IS PROFESSIONAL MODELING? Well, to answer that question we need to answer one other question first. What is a model? A model is someone who, essentially, shows something off - a suit, a casual outfit, a motorbike, a pair of sunglasses, a computer, a soft drink, whatever - for the purpose of presenting such goods or services in an attractive light. Think about the enormous success of Abercrombie & Fitch clothing - because of the images of these highly attractive models captured by the expert lensmanship of photographer Bruce Weber, A&F is one of the most popular clothing brands today. Models literally helped make the A&F brand. So professional modeling, then, is the field of modeling to make a living, to make a career. But professional modeling is actually more than that. The common perception about models is that all they do is stand around and look handsome, or that they stroll down a runway during a fashion show without any preparation other than their mental game. Models have to be organized like any other professional. They have appointments to keep for such things as wardrobe, make-up, hair and, of course, they have to keep their beautiful bodies in shape, which means they have to watch what they eat and and work out at a gym or some exercise regimen. If you're a good-looking guy but you're disorganized at such things as maintaining schedules or keeping appointments, being a model might prove to be too much of a challenge for you. |
